Areas of Research/Expertise

My main interests are in the use of Crystal Engineering and Supramolecular Synthesis to design and fabricate new solid forms of known active pharmaceutical molecules (API), to provide them with enhanced properties. Aiming to improve API bioavailability we have been searching for new solid forms, such as salts, molecular salts, solvates and co-crystals to modify and stabilize their physicochemical properties and controlling polymorphism. New API Ionic Liquid forms were also attained, avoiding polymorphism. Still searching for new and stable forms of pharmaceutically active molecules, we developed a novel approach, the synthesis of bio-inspired Metal-Organic Frameworks, BioMOFs, using safe metal ions and active biomolecules as spacers or guests are underway. These systems are being designed for application in drug storage and delivery. In the diversity of systems we have been studying and developing, we recurred to Mechanochemistry as main synthetic approach. Mechanochemistry a solvent free and environmentally friendly synthetic technique has proved to be efficient, has granted good yields and selectivity has also been an important issue.Different techniques are being used in the characterization of the products obtained, with special relevance for X-ray powder and single crystal diffraction. Structure solution from single crystal data is a long term established activity within the group. Diffraction data on powder samples are being collected at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble and we have recently started to solve structures from powder data.
